Dear Friends, Let's get in front of it. That's our mission here at NCCC—getting in front of cancer to stop it before it starts by researching its causes so we know where to intervene. Cancer will soon surpass heart disease as the nation’s #1 killer. As we continue to help people after they get sick, we must do even more. At NCCC, we are working hard to get out in front by learning how to stop the development of the disease before people get sick. The stories in this eNewsletter show some of the ways we do this. If you agree with the approach—getting out in front—please consider adding NCCC to your holiday giving. Happy Holidays! NCCC Research Scientist on Recent Mammography Controversy The November 17 release of the US Preventative Task Force’s recommendation for breast cancer screening has caused a nationwide controversy. To share her expert opinion on the topic, NCCC Research Scientist Christina Clarke, Ph.D., wrote a letter to the editor that was published in the San Francisco Chronicle on November 20th. Click here to read Dr. Clarke’s letter titled, “Research Goal is Prevention" (please scroll to bottom of webpage for letter) Latest Findings on Secondhand Smoke and Breast Cancer Make International News NCCC scientists conduct studies as part of the large and ongoing California Teachers Study (CTS). With data from over 130,000 teachers and school administrators, the CTS focuses on cancers and health in relation to environmental and lifestyle factors. A recently completed CTS project led by NCCC Senior Research Scientist Peggy Reynolds, Ph.D., has been discussed in national and international media. Findings from the study of secondhand smoke and its impact on breast cancer were featured on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric earlier this month. The study and its findings provide insights into how breast cancer may develop. Click here to find out what Dr. Reynolds and her team found. Dr. Esther John Invited to Speak as Part of National Cancer Institute’s Prestigious Seminar Series NCCC Senior Research Scientist Esther John, Ph.D., was recently invited to speak as part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program’s Visiting Scholars Seminar Series. According to the NCI, this series “brings outstanding scientists in the extramural population science community to the NCI to share their science as well as to meet with researchers and program staff at the NCI for a day.” Dr. John was identified on the basis of her nationally-renowned work on cancers in Hispanic and African-American populations and her many studies within the Breast Cancer Family Registry. She spoke as the visiting scholar at the December 14th NCI seminar in Rockville, Maryland. Let’s Get in Front of It this Holiday Season As Californians we share a one-in-two lifetime probability of developing cancer. That’s every other person. Are you okay with a 50/50 chance, or do you think we should be doing more to find the causes of cancer and eradicate this disease that causes so much harm to loved ones and families? When a problem is this big—a one in two probability—we have to do more than just try to treat it. We need to get in front of it, too, with prevention research, so we can stop people from getting sick.
