"Now What? The New Normal of Cancer Survivorship After Treatment"
NCCC sponsored its 2nd Annual Cancer Survivorship Conference, “Now What? The ‘New Normal’ of Cancer Survivorship After Treatment,” on November 8, 2008 in San Francisco. For many, cancer is a chronic disease. More individuals are living longer with a history of cancer than ever before due to advances in medical screening, diagnosis and treatment. These changes have placed a new emphasis on “survivorship,” including issues of employment, health and life insurance, and long term side effects of treatment, such as joint pain, cardiac toxicity, and sexual function. Individuals living with a cancer history, as well as their doctors, face new challenges and opportunities. This annual conference is directed to patients, families and caregivers. The 2008 Cancer Survivorship Conference was sponsored by the Northern California Cancer Center with co-sponsors Stanford Cancer Center and American Cancer Society. Audio-programs of the General Session presentations are available below. To encourage dialogue in small groups, there were breakout sessions (not audio taped) for specific topics including long-term and late side effects of cancer treatment, sexual function, genetic counseling, employment, health insurance. Conference registration exceeded capacity this year. If you would like to be added to the list for the 3rd Survivorship Conference to be held on November 14, 2009, please contact NCCC Community Education at education@nccc.org.
