On Friday evening, September 5, ABC, NBC, and CBS simultaneously broadcasted Stand Up To Cancer, a one hour TV special which raised funds to fight cancer and gave viewers more insight about this deadly disease. The three national networks donated a full, commercial-free hour that included celebrities and musical performances.
NCCC was featured in a segment on ABC/KGO-7 during a quick break from the Stand Up To Cancer television event.
"Without examining the patterns of cancers within
the whole population as well as within smaller specific groups, we have no way of knowing how well we're doing in addressing the cancer problem for everybody, no way of knowing whether the breakthroughs in the lab are making a difference in the lives of everyday people."
-Dr. Sally Glaser, NCCC Interim Executive Director

What is a cancer registry?
Not only do cancer registries provide information for describing cancer occurrence and trends, but they also follow patients so survival patterns can be calculated. The registry facilitates studies that seek a better understanding of how the burden of cancer is distributed in communities and why these patterns have developed, which can lead to cancer prevention strategies.
