Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts is a cancer detection program in the California Department of Public Health that provides California's medically underserved women access to screening and diagnostic services for breast and cervical cancer.

Eligibility for breast cancer screening includes women who:

• Are age 50 or over
• Had previous breast cancer screening and/or cervical cancer screening through the Every Woman Counts program
• Have income at or below 200% of the Federal poverty level
• Have medical insurance that does not cover these services
• Have a high insurance deductible or co-payment
• Are not getting these services through Medi-Cal or another government insurance program
• Live in California

Eligibility for cervical cancer screening includes women who:

• Are age 25 or over
• Have income at or below 200% of the Federal poverty level
• Have medical insurance that does not cover these services
• Have a high insurance deductible or co-payment
• Are not getting these services through Medi-Cal or another government insurance program
• Live in California

The statewide toll-free Consumer 800 Number operated by the Northern California Cancer Center provides a central referral point, statewide publicity and promotion of this program, and complete and consistent data collection from both incoming and follow-up calls.

Women can call the Consumer 800 Number to:

• Get information about the program
• Pre-qualify for breast and/or cervical cancer screening services
• Receive referrals to participating providers in their neighborhood

The statewide toll-free Consumer 800 Number operates from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Calls are taken in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese and Korean. Callers hear a brief initial greeting in English, followed by messages in each language to guide them to an appropriate operator.

In addition, NCCC attempts two follow-up calls to all eligible women who call the Consumer 800 Number to determine if each woman has scheduled an appointment and received services.

Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts is funded by a federal grant and state tobacco tax revenue.
