Age, period, cohort, and immigration effects on cancer incidence
Cancer registry data have traditionally been limited for examining the impact of immigration factors on cancer patterns. In addition, intercensal population estimates for detailed subgroups characterized by race/ethnicity and immigration status are not readily available. With these data limitations, we currently do not have a good understanding of cancer incidence and mortality trends in specific racial/ethnic and immigrant groups. Hispanics and Asians are the two largest growing racial/ethnic demographic segments of the population. With the vast heterogeneity among specific Hispanic and Asian subgroups and immigrant cohorts with respect to health behaviors and cancer risk factors, developing the data sources to enable analyses of cancer incidence and mortality patterns by age, period, and immigration cohort could significantly contribute towards cancer control efforts in these groups. The overall aim of this study is obtain numerator (cancer cases) and denominator (population estimates) data for Hispanics and detailed Asian subgroups in California in order to characterize the age, period, cohort, and immigration effects on the incidence of cancer.
