Association of Medicaid status with late-stage cancer and validation of Medicaid status from the medical record
This study will examine the relationship between Medicaid enrollment status and stage at diagnosis of colorectal, breast, cervical, prostate cancers, and melanoma using cancer registry data from all California SEER registries and statewide enrollment files from Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program. In addition, this study proposes to measure the validity of cancer registry information on Medicaid status and to assess the biases associated with currently used methods to assign this data item. After linkage of approximately 120,000 cases with more than 8.4 million Medi-Cal enrollment files, it will have created a statewide, population-based linked data set that will be a resource for future studies of treatment, survival, and other health outcomes among Medi-Cal recipients diagnosed with cancer over a two-year period. Six scientific manuscripts, five addressing stage at diagnosis relations and one addressing validity of Medicaid status, are expected to result from this project.
