Data and Statistics Overview

NCCC operates the award-winning cancer registry for the Greater Bay Area, collecting valuable information on cancer occurrence and survival. This data is utilized by our Surveillance Research team to learn more about cancer causes, mortality, care and prevention. Follow the links below to find out more.

Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry

Information on the GBACR, the data collected, and how this data is used.

The Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry (GBACR) gathers information on all cancers diagnosed and treated in a nine-county area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties). The GBACR collects information from medical records provided by hospitals, doctors, and other care facilities, to better understand cancer occurrence and survival in the Greater Bay Area.

Registry Operations

How the registry operates, the history of cancer reporting, and how cases are ascertained.

Registry Operations is responsible for collecting and managing the data in the Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry (GBACR) - employing strict quality control and confidentiality procedures to assure the integrity of the cancer registry database, including providing training and consultation for staff at reporting facilities.

Surveillance Research

How registry data is used, the goals of surveillance research and what the key focus areas are.

Cancer surveillance research involves using cancer and population data to better understand patterns of cancer occurrence, treatment and survival in the population. NCCC researchers in the Surveillance Research program use Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry data to examine these patterns for the Greater Bay Area, state of California, and more broadly for the United States and other countries.

Cancer Data and Statistics

Cancer data, registry news and reports, and custom tabulated data and fact sheets.

The Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry provides both statistical cancer information for the general public as well as access to data needed by investigators to conduct research studies, as legally mandated by the state. Individual patient data may be used to study cancer causes, prevention, care and treatment. These data are released only after requirements to protect confidentiality, set by state law, are met.
